GREAT AND MARVELLOUS GOD

Job 5:8-11

Sunday Morning Sermon

May 31, 1998

Fair Avenue Baptist Church

This is a wonderful passage in the Word of God.

“I would seek unto God”

The God “which doeth great things”

The God which doeth “unsearchable” things,

The God which doeth “marvellous things without number,”

We have a great God.

The God of the cross,

The God of Calvary,

The God of salvation,

The God of heaven,

The God of the streets of gold.

Deut. 10:21, “He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.”

“These great things”

“Thy God”

My God ...

The God of glory,

The God of praise,

The God of worship,

Thy God,

My God.

I Samuel 12:24, “Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.”

the “great things he hath done for you.”

The great and marvellous God,

Who gave us life,

Our Creator,

Our God,

My God.

Don’t we take it so lightly?

Could it be because we don’t ever stop and realize what He has done for us?

Most of us were born here in America,

Where the poorest person sitting in this room has it better than 85% of all the people in the world?

When most people in this world do not have a telephone,

When most people in this world do not have a television,

When most people on this earth do not own a car,

or a home,

or a piece of land,

When most people living on this earth today do not have heating or air conditioning,

When most people living outside of the United States went to bed hungry last night,

When so many people from around the world are saving every penny they can to get a chance to get to America.

We have a wonderful God,

We have a marvellous God,

We have a great God.

Psalm 126:3, “The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.”

“hath done great things for us”

“we are glad”

If we would just stop and think about the great things God has done for us, it would make us glad.

God has blessed us,

God has given us much,

God has been good to us,

And we should be glad.

God has blessed so many of us,

Given us good families,

Given us a good wife or husband,

Given us a good home,

God has really blessed us.

We often sing the song, Count Your Blessings,

“When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Count your blessings,

Name them one by one,

Count your blessings,

See what God hath done,

Count your blessings,

Name them one by one,

Count your many blessings,

See what God hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?

Count your many blessings, Every doubt will fly,

And you will be singing as the day goes by.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,

Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold.

Count your many blessings, money cannot buy,

Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

So, amid the conflict, whether great or small,

Do not be discouraged, God is over all,

Count your many blessings, angels will attend,

Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Count your blessings,

Name them one by one,

Count your blessings,

See what God hath done,

Count your blessings,

Name them one by one,

Count your many blessings,

See what God hath done.

In spite of what we think,

Even when we are discouraged,

Even when we’re burdened with a load of care,

Even when the cross is heavy,

If we would just stop and count our blessings,

Name them one by one,

It really would surprised us what the Lord has done.

Psalm 77:14, “Thou art the God that doest wonders...”

Jeremiah 33:3, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

God wants to bless us,

God wants to do great things for us,

And He has done great and marvellous things for us,

He has done wonders for us,

Sometimes we just forget.

Someone may be saying, “Preacher, it just doesn’t seem that God is blessing my life.”

OK, could it be that you have put other things in front of God in your life?

Have you neglected God’s Word?

Did you read your Bible this morning?

Have you neglected to pray?

Did you pray this morning?

Have you neglected to do God’s Will?

Are you in God’s Will right this moment?

Jer. 33:3, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not.”

Have you called out to God?

I Samuel 12:23, “Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you...”

How is your prayer life?

Have you sinned against the Lord?

Have you stopped praying?

Did you take a few minutes this morning to pray for the services?

Did you take a few minutes this morning to pray for lost souls?

Did you take a few minutes this morning to pray for this pastor?

How is your prayer life?

Could that be the reason you will that God is not blessing your life?

I John 5:14, “...if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us...”

Are you in God’s Will?

Have you answered God’s call?

God wants to bless,

God is the great God,

He is the God who does great things,

Who wants to do great things,

Who will do great things if we ask according to His Will,

A great God,

Who does great things,

Who goes unsearchable things,

Who does marvellous things without number,

Who gives rain upon the earth,

Who sends waters upon the fields,

Who sets on high those that are low,

We have a great God,

Let that thought flow through your life,

Let this passage in Job Chapter Five fill your heart,

Let the Word of God speak to you,

The Great God,

The Marvellous God,

The Unsearchable God,

Thank You, Lord.

Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul,

Thank you, Lord, for making me whole,

Thank you, Lord, for giving to me,

Thy great salvation, so rich and free.
