Is the time spent studying and practicing the steps to convert a layer 3 IP multicast address to a layer 2 MAC multicast address ie: converting a IP addresses last 23 bits into binary then converting that into hex for the last 3 octets of the multicast MAC address really on the test. Do I have to actually perform this calculation with an multicast IP address to answer a question on the test or do I just have to know how the procedure is done? I would like to know the reason why I would have to manually computate this, if the router is going to convert this thru CGMP to the switch? Can anyone give me a real life example were this will come in handy.

P.S. Bonus question "what the hell does variably subnetted mean?"
